How to find an estate planning attorney?

It can be overwhelming to find an estate planning attorney. The two key ways that people come to me are through personal referrals and Yelp, so that’s where I would suggest starting. Ask around. People don’t tend to want to talk about estate planning – but many times your friends or family already have attorneys they have been working with and you may not know about it. Check out Yelp to see attorneys who are near you and who have strong reviews.

Then reach out to the attorney’s office and try to schedule an initial consultation. Most attorneys will do an initial, complimentary consultation to make sure that it’s the right fit.

In that meeting, see how you feel about talking with the attorney. Do you feel comfortable? Can you talk about some personal issues? Are you okay answering the questions your attorney asks? You need to feel comfortable with your attorney and your attorney has to be able to ask you questions. Most of the time people retain attorneys based on whether they can get along with them and whether they’re confident in their legal background and knowledge.
