Thanksgiving Topics for Your Family

Thanksgiving is always a great time to get the family together, but have you talked about some of the more difficult things involving your family?

  1. Do you have estate planning documents? If so, where are they located? (You don’t, in general, need to tell anyone what they say)

  2. If you don’t have an estate plan, why not? (Contact me for a complimentary consultation!)

  3. Do you have a power of attorney — both financial and health? Where are those located in case someone needs them quickly? (These are required for anyone over 18! Otherwise the family/loved one is going to court to get the right to make those decisions. )

  4. What assets do you have? What debts? Where are the copies of latest bills? (This is important if someone needs to jump in and pay bills temporarily)

  5. What are your wishes for at home care vs care in another place? Do you have disability insurance or long term care insurance to cover this?

  6. What are your wishes for your body when you die?

There are a slew of other things that you can talk about, but this should get you started. And afterwards, let me know: how did it go?
